Fall 2010

WHAT'S NEW IN NEW ORLEANS!
Travel + Leisure Magazine ranked New Orleans the seventh best city in the U.S. and Canada for the World’s Best Awards 2010 reader’s poll. This is the first time since 2005 that New Orleans has made this prestigious list.

New Orleans was ranked number one internationally for nightlife according to TripAdvisor Annual Travelers’ Choice Destinations Awards. New Orleans was also recognized in four other categories including third in the Top 10 Food & Wine Destinations in the United States and fourth in the Top 10 Food & Wine Destinations in the World. The Crescent City placed ninth in the Top 10 Culture & Sightseeing Destinations in the United States and 15th in the Top 25 Destinations in the United States.

PROSPECT 1.5 NEW ORLEANS
Presenting over fifty artist in venues throughout the city.

As part of its mission to present and promote the art and artists of New Orleans, U.S. Biennial will present Prospect 1.5 New Orleans, a fifteen-week program of exhibitions, symposiums, and public events taking place November, 6, 2010 through February 19, 2011. Prospect 1.5 will highlight the contemporary art scene in the city, with over fifty artists presenting work in thirteen venues throughout the New Orleans metropolitan area.

Along with artists born and still working in New Orleans, approximately one-third of Prospect 1.5’s participants are native New Orleanians who have since moved away, several of whom will be exhibiting in their hometown for the first time through Prospect 1.5. In addition, the exhibition program will showcase the latest generation of young artists who have adopted New Orleans as their home, many moving to the city since Hurricane Katrina five years ago. With the world’s focus once again on the Gulf region following this summer’s devastating oil spill, Prospect 1.5 calls attention to the significance – and vibrancy – of New Orleans’ artsy community.

AND THEY'RE OFF...
With a history dating back to 1872, the Fair Grounds Race Course is the third oldest continuously operating thoroughbred racetrack in the United States. And one of the most famous. The Fair Grounds has seen more than its share of horse racing history made along its mile-long oval. The names of the jockeys who have ridden to victory there – Arcaro, Longden, Shoemaker, Mooney, Delahoussaye, Pat Day and many more – are as legendary as the horses themselves, among whom Black Gold, Pan Zareta, Whirlaway and Risen Star (literally) lead the pack.

Racing season at the Fair Grounds runs from Thanksgiving weekend through the end of March the following year. Many featured races and “handicaps” are held throughout the season, including the prestigious Louisiana Derby just before the end of each season. The track offers a wide selection of seating options, ranging from ultra-modern dining facilities in a glass-enclosed clubhouse -- complete with video monitors at each table -- to no-frills grandstand seating outdoors. “Rail birds” can belly up to the fence at the finish line, cheering on their favorites as they round the final turn in a hoof-thundering finale. A wide range of betting options are available at dozens of pari-mutuel counters and the odds can change for better or worse up to one minute before post time.

The Fair Grounds are conveniently located to Maison DuBois, race to the reservations page to book your stay with us.

NEW ORLEANS HEART OF THE GARDENS
When you hear “New Orleans” you normally think music, cuisine & architecture…. but don’t miss features like the city’s gardens, public parks, neutral grounds and landscape! Begin along the Mississippi River and Jackson Square, where this port city was founded in 1718, and which transported people from many countries around the world who have shaped our various types of gardens over the last three centuries.

Travel along the Esplanade Ridge, down Esplanade Avenue through Faubourg Treme and the mellow Bayou St. John area, with its historic houses and gardens such as the Spanish Customs House and the Pitot House. The Crescent City’s mild, temperate climate, which is neither tropical nor sub tropical, supports a variety of trees, plants, vegetables and herbs. Something is always in bloom year round!

Native live oak trees spread their arms to provide a year round green canopy over many of our streets and homes. Ride through City Park, the 5th largest urban park in the country, which has the largest collection of mature live oak trees in the world. Stop and visit at the New Orleans Botanical Garden, a fitting gateway to the city’s gardens.

Also visit Longue Vue, a magnificent city estate, and tour the 8 acres of beautifully landscaped formal and informal gardens that surround this Classic Revival mansion. On your way back to Maison DuBois make note of the extensive green rebuilding that has lifted our city up from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.

Explore New Orleans... you won't be disappointed!
