NEW ORLEANS HEART OF THE GARDENS
When you hear “New Orleans” you normally think music, cuisine & architecture…. but don’t miss features like the city’s gardens, public parks, neutral grounds and landscape! Begin along the Mississippi River and Jackson Square, where this port city was founded in 1718, and which transported people from many countries around the world who have shaped our various types of gardens over the last three centuries.
Travel along the Esplanade Ridge, down Esplanade Avenue through Faubourg Treme and the mellow Bayou St. John area, with its historic houses and gardens such as the Spanish Customs House and the Pitot House. The Crescent City’s mild, temperate climate, which is neither tropical nor sub tropical, supports a variety of trees, plants, vegetables and herbs. Something is always in bloom year round!
Native live oak trees spread their arms to provide a year round green canopy over many of our streets and homes. Ride through City Park, the 5th largest urban park in the country, which has the largest collection of mature live oak trees in the world. Stop and visit at the New Orleans Botanical Garden, a fitting gateway to the city’s gardens.
Also visit Longue Vue, a magnificent city estate, and tour the 8 acres of beautifully landscaped formal and informal gardens that surround this Classic Revival mansion. On your way back to Maison DuBois make note of the extensive green rebuilding that has lifted our city up from the wrath of Hurricane Katrina.
